Civil Rights Law

Civil rights are enforceable rights and privileges which, if interfered with, give rise to a cause of action for injury. Examples of civil rights are freedom of speech, the right to equality in public places, the right to vote, the right to be free from unlawful searches and seizures by police officers and government actors, freedom from involuntary servitude, freedom of assembly, and freedom of the press.

Discrimination occurs when the civil rights of individuals are denied or interfered with because of their membership in a group or class of individuals. Such classes include gender, age, religion, race, disability, national origin, and sexual orientation.

I handle civil rights and discrimination cases in both the state and federal courts. These cases can be hard emotionally and financially on plaintiffs seeking compensation for wrongs committed by others against them. Defendants are usually government agencies with never-ending financial resources.
